“Home idea with IKEA”: a home office goes smart

Meet Darius, the hero of this week who works in IT and usually does that from the comfort of his home. He is lucky to have a separate home office in the apartment but not entirely happy with the way it‘s furnished. Darius is dreaming of a modern and ergonomic place to work, more space for storage and a cosy reading corner to spend his free time after work. But does it mean that he should level his old room to the ground? Our interior designer Gabija has shown what can be done without major repairs.

The more challenges, the more fun

Before the renovation, this home office was quite modest. In the very centre of the room, there was a desk with all the necessary equipment for work, but no more space for anything else.

Our interior designer had a challenge of not only fitting a new desk in the small room, but also planning a storage space for all the things Darius needs close at hand while he works. It may seem like a simple task to do – let‘s just put a few extra cabinets, and we‘re done. But with pipes hidden along the whole perimeter of the room, there was no chance of putting them on the floor.

No need to choose between cosy or smart

Gabija has designed a home office that‘s both cosy and smart: the blinds can be opened and closed remotely, the air quality is controlled by an air purifier, and the table lamp doubles as a speaker. There‘s even a timer to remind Darius how important it is to take breaks while working!

The windows are covered with KADRILJ roller blinds that filter light and reduce reflections on the computer screen. They are connected to the hub and signal repeater, which allows controlling them remotely.
FÖRNUFTIG air purifier keeps the air in the office fresh and clean. Depending on preferences, the device can be hung on the wall (both vertically and horizontally) or placed on the floor by using the included floor stand. Setting the air purifier to sleep mode during the night lets one sleep well while the air is purified.
SJÖMÄRKE wireless charger is a perfect solution for those who don’t like getting tangled in cables, as it allows charging the phone right on the desk. Cannot see this charger? That’s right because it’s mounted hidden under the tabletop.

Turning long hours into happy hours

Working from home requires having a place that allows constant movement, as moving your body makes you both feel and work better. So that Darius can change positions from sitting to standing, Gabija has replaces his old desk with the new one from TROTTEN series. This sit/stand desk has a crank handle that allows to adjust the height between 70 and 120 cm.

The desk is combined with a new HATTEFJÄLL office chair with adjustable lumber support, armrests and an automatic tilt mechanism. For even more comfort, we‘ve added a BORTBERG lumbar cushion. It helps to sit up straight, which relieves both the spine and lower back.

To finish the combination, there‘s also a transparent protector under the chair to spare the floor from spills, wear and dirt.

Work is done, it’s time to relax

Darius uses his office not only for working – he also wanted to have some space to relax. The HAVBERG armchair in leather is perfect to lean back while reading. It‘s swivels, which makes it easy to reach things from the desk without standing up, and combined with a footstool that‘s ideal to rest the feet or to seat a guest.

A rug can also appear in the office to make the room cosier and to absorb undesirable noise.

When there’s nothing to hide

The ENHET open frame with shelves is ideal for storing books and other frequently used items. It puts things on display, making them easy to find and to reach.

Kitchen cabinets in the office?

The usual office furniture in this room has been replaced with a combination of METOD cabinets. Originally, these are designed for the kitchen, but they work just as well in any space of the home, especially where standard solutions would not fit. The METOD system offers a wide choice of fronts and cover panels, so there is something for every taste.

More than just a table lamp
