This week, we invite you to visit Renata, who lives with their daughter in their own home and has decided it’s time to refresh the living room. They lead a busy life – lecturing at university, marking students’ work at home, enjoying entertaining guests, and relaxing with a good book. Yet, the current living room isn’t quite right for either work or rest: they often find themselves curling up on the floor to read, while souvenirs from their travels lie forgotten in boxes due to a lack of shelf space. The mismatched furniture collected over time adds little warmth or joy to the room. But can this chaotic space be transformed into the home they’ve been dreaming of? Interior designer Toma is certain it can!

Interior designer‘s task:

  • Create two functional areas within the open-plan space: a living room that meets the family’s needs and a welcoming dining area.
  • Fit a comfy sofa-bed, a piano and a dining table for large family gatherings into a 22-square-metre room.
  • Reduce visual clutter by creating smart storage solutions for everything from tableware and books to meaningful decorative items.
  • Refresh the interior style by adding lightness, brightness and a touch of Provence charm.

Why Provence?

Renata had always dreamed of a Provençal style – light, airy, and full of warmth and tranquillity. With lavender already in bloom on their terrace, it felt only natural to extend that soft, Southern French atmosphere indoors. We brought it to life with gentle pastel shades, subtle blue accents, and woven furniture and details that complement the room’s wooden floors and ceiling beautifully.

“Neutral colours at home give you the freedom to change things up. Simply swapping the curtains, cushions or a rug can make the space feel completely new.”

Toma Laucienė, IKEA interior designer

Bring these great solutions home:

Dining area

It was important to Renata to have a spacious dining area, as family gatherings and celebrations at home can sometimes bring together as many as twenty people. That’s why the room now features the round, extendable table with its elegant curved leg. A round table like this seats more guests than a typical square or rectangular one. The sturdy wooden chairs, paired with matching cushions, are not only very comfortable but also add a lively touch to the interior.

KRAGSTA coffee table and AGEN chairs, perfectly complementing the wooden ceiling, create a harmonious style ideal for slow tea ceremonies, coffee breaks, and conversations with the daughter.

The VRETSTORP sofa-bed offers comfort for daytime lounging and easily transforms into a cosy bed for overnight guests. Its built-in storage provides a practical solution for bedding, while the striped slipcover adds a subtle Provence-inspired elegance and can be removed and washed as needed.

Lighting plays a vital role in creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, with the ARÖD floor lamp and BLIDVÄDER table lamp offering soft, ambient illumination.

“To create a cohesive interior, choose furniture in matching or complementary colours and similar textures. In this room, for instance, the main pieces are white, providing a bright, neutral backdrop that lets bolder accents – like the sofa bed, armchairs or textiles – take centre stage.”

BILLY, is that you?

It might not be obvious at first glance, but the updated living room does indeed feature the iconic BILLY bookcase – just in a more unexpected form. Since both Renata and their daughter are passionate readers with an impressive library, interior designer Toma combined a clever corner solution. Open shelves hold plenty of books, glass shelves with built-in lighting are perfect for displaying glassware, and closed cabinets provide discreet storage for everything else. A thoughtful detail? The glass-fronted doors feature wallpaper cuttings framed behind the glass – a subtle decorative touch that blends beautifully with the rest of the interior.

More tidiness with less effort

When storage space starts running low at home, the solution is often closer than you think – simply make use of empty walls and choose your furniture thoughtfully. The HAUGA sideboard is a great example of how to store not only dinnerware, but also table linens, board games and other frequently used items in a stylish and practical way. For a more flexible option, the RÅSKOG trolley comes in handy. It easily rolls from one spot to another, making it perfect for storing knitting yarns, craft supplies or even kitchen essentials.

Worth a stage

After the makeover, more attention was given to Renata’s daughter’s passion for playing the piano. We created a stage worthy of the instrument, where guests can enjoy the music together. Above the piano, decorative shelves were added to display sheet music, pictures and travel souvenirs.
